Music Monday: “Signs” by Bloc Party

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Signs”
Artist: Bloc Party
Album: Intimacy (2008)

Lyrics taken from

[Verse 1]
Two ravens in the old oak tree
And one for you and one for me
And bluebells in the late December
I see signs now all the time
The last time we slept together
There was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me
But I’m the one that’s drowning now

[Verse 2]
I can sleep forever these days
Cause in your dreams I see you again
But this time-fleshed out fuller face
In your confirmation dress
It was so like you to visit me
To let you know you were okay
It was so like you to visit me
You’re always worried about someone else

At your funeral I was so upset
So, so upset
In your life you were larger than this
Statue statuesque

[Chorus] [x2]
I see signs now all the time
That you’re not dead, you’re sleeping
I believe in anything
That brings you back home to me

“Signs”, by Bloc Party, begins with the sound of bells and xylophone before a pulsing bass beat and synthesizers build into the background to introduce the first verse. Utilizing a variety of analog and synthesized instruments, the music of this song contrasts the melancholy lyrics about a vision of a deceased loved one returning in a dream. The visitation is by no means malevolent, and remembrances of the loss and grief are mentioned throughout. There is a positive spin in the denial of someone being completely gone from the world in order to keep their memory alive; there is beauty in both the sentiment and musical composition of this song.
