Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “What We Had”
Artist: Harvard
Album: The Inevitable and I (2009)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
There’s a suit in the basement, boy
A dress in your closet, girl
Dust it off, put it on, we’re going out
To make the best of what we had
To make the best of what we had
It turns me on
To hear your song playing
The blacker the heart
The bigger the start, you know
I am your star
I am your star
There’s a suit in your coffin, boy
But there is no body there
There’s a dress in your eyelids, girl
But no one to buy it
So dust it off, put it on, we’re stayin’ in
I made a meal and we can wear nothin’
To make the best of what we had
To make the best of what we had
It turns me on
To hear your song playing
The blacker the heart
The bigger the start, you know
I am your star
I am your star
I am your star
I am your star
I am your star
The way home is never old, never old
The way home is never old, never old
I lost my way
I lost my way every day
It turns me on
To hear your song playing
The blacker the heart
The bigger the start, you know
I am your star
I am your star
Leading in with waltzing piano and clean guitar, “What We Had” by now defunct band Harvard is a melancholy love song that tugs at the heart strings. Permeating with emotion, this track evokes images of a dancing couple as it crescendos from its humble harmonies at the song’s introduction to a full-fledged fest of feeling. Taking the tradition of many building songs, “What We Had” slowly adds more instruments to the melody and harmony while vocalist Lee Herrera’s crooning soars atop to create a sense of unity. The song structure is impressive with the ebbs and swells of musical emotion taking the listener along for the ride. I highly recommend this band to fans of Circa Survive and Closure in Moscow, and not just because it came up on their Pandora station recommendations.
