Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “Bring You Down”
Artist: The Dear Hunter
Album: Migrant (2013)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
You took me by surprise
A stranger through my eager eyes
An ego that’s been spilled and spoiled by another
But don’t let me bring you down
No, don’t let me bring you down
No, don’t let me bring you down…
…again
I tried so hard to hide
The cynic in me far from sight
But moments still arise when my flaws get the best of me
Oh
So, don’t let me bring you down
No don’t let me bring you down
So, don’t let me bring you down…
…again
Every sudden feeling of helplessness
Led me down to the bottom of myself
And I couldn’t, I couldn’t, I couldn’t wait for you
Devils bound about in my heart singing
Loud enough to drown out the beauty I’m missing
And I couldn’t, I couldn’t, I couldn’t wait for you
So don’t let me bring you down
No, don’t let me bring you down
No, don’t let me bring you down…
…again
“Bring You Down”, by The Dear Hunter, comes from Migrant; the band’s second release outside of the Acts concept albums. Beginning with dissonant strings, a lovely piano part plays the main melody with Crescenzo’s voice floating above. Another song that builds slowly during the verse, its chorus comes in strong and hits with additional brass and percussion. The lyrics describe someone trying to ward off a loved one from getting too close for fear of being brought down by the inherent cynicism of the speaker. Crescenzo’s lyrics are intimate and describe a fear of many people in relationships: that their faults will somehow bring it all crashing down. I chose this song for its emotive content and showcase of songwriting from one of the criminally lesser known bands of the 21st Century.
