Music Monday: “Winter Solstice” by Cold Specks

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Winter Solstice”
Artist: Cold Specks
Album: I Predict a Graceful Expulsion (2012)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

We fall from a dying tree
We wait for it to leave
I wanna be, I wanna be
Leave ashes for borrowed instruments and borrowed hearts
We will pass them on to every saint and dead lover
I have my God ‘til he’ll give me my ghost

Sons and daughters
May you kill what my blind heart could not
Sons and daughters
May you kill what my blind heart could not
Sons and daughters
May you kill

I saw your grandfather’s death on the news
Remembered when you took me to your room
You put your hand over your chest
So that the fire would rage

Whoa I…
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
So that the fire would rage

Yeah, you know better ways to fall
Yeah, you know better ways to fall
You know better ways to fall
You know me down, knock me down
Put my cold hand over my cold heart
Turn the fire and die whoa
Turn your fire and die whoa
Turn the fire to die

“Winter Solstice”, by Cold Specks (Ladan Hussein), is a song that expresses the sensibilities of winter through its title, lyrics, and instrumentation. Beginning with a simple piano part, Hussein’s uniquely soft voice seeps in with the verse. The chorus is introduced with percussion before returning to the subdued seclusion of her vocals and the piano. As the song builds, the chorus returns with additional instruments and a chorus of singers in the refrain of “sons and daughters”. The song evokes walking through a wintry landscape of fresh fallen snow. I chose “Winter Solstice” for its emotive quality and association with the current season, especially since the solstice is only a couple of days away; enjoy!
