Music Monday: “The Difference Between Medicine and Poison is in the Dose” by Circa Survive

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “The Difference Between Medicine and Poison is in the Dose”
Artist: Circa Survive
Album: On Letting Go (2007)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

[Verse 1]
Move one inch at a time
Don’t make shit rhyme
Would it be easy to repeat the first line?
My mind’s not a well
It won’t run dry
Just keep drinking water and you’ll be alright
This is paralysis with no time at all to let go

[Chorus]
Well don’t call me by my full name
And all this is temporary
It feels much better to know you won’t feel a thing
Well don’t talk about it;
Write it down but don’t ask for help
I can’t be honest with even myself
Did you ever wish you were somebody else?

[Verse 2]
Accomplishments are transient
They pulled me in unremittingly
Just lasting this long
I feel relieved to let repetition save me

[Chorus]
Well don’t call me by my full name
And all this is temporary
It feels much better to know that you won’t feel a thing
Well don’t talk about it;
Write it down but don’t ask for help
I can’t be honest with even myself
Did you ever wish you were somebody else?

[Bridge]
Move one inch at a time
You’ll be just fine
Move one once at a time
You’ll find…
They pulled me in but accomplishments are transient
They pulled me in but accomplishments are transient

[Chorus]
Well don’t call me by my full name
And all this is temporary
It feels much better to know that you won’t feel a thing
Well don’t talk about it;
Write it down but don’t ask for help
I can’t be honest with even myself
Did you ever wish you were…
Did you ever wish you were…
Did you ever wish you were somebody else?

Beginning with impressive percussion, “The Difference Between Medicine and Poison is in the Dose” is the quintessential expression of the Circa Survive’s appeal. With ethereal guitar lines, charging bass, and Anthony Green’s unique voice, the song carries all of Circa Survive’s best qualities. The lyrics describe the difficulty of finding one’s identity and the jealously of seeing others who appear to have better lives. The chorus is catchy with a beat that grooves in spite of the melancholy lyrics. Green’s vocals swell from delicate to near grating in a believable expression of the song’s sentiments. Circa Survive is one of my nine (yes, nine) favorite bands, and for good reason; their records capture and harness some of the magnetism in their performances, and their albums all feature artwork by the incredible Esao Andrews.
