Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “Every Stone”
Artist: Manchester Orchestra
Album: Hope (2014)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
Well you might just miss the mark
If you’re keeping everyone away
You didn’t mean to, you didn’t want to
Well you might just leave a mark
If you don’t give anyone a say
You never want to, you never mean to
Every stone I’ve thrown has gone away
It’s gone away, it’s gone away
Every stone I’ve thrown has gone away
It’s gone away, it’s gone away
Away, away
It’s the notion that it doesn’t matter even if we stay
And it’s overrated and manipulating
Nobody ever has a say, it makes me wonder who can wait
And it tests my patience cause it’s not worth waiting
Every stone I’ve thrown has gone away
It’s gone away, it’s gone away
Every stone I’ve thrown has gone away
It’s gone away, it’s gone away
Away, away
Away, away, away
“Every Stone” was originally recorded for Manchester Orchestra’s 2014 album, Cope, in a hard-rock style. The band took the songs from that album and brought them to life in a more somber tone for their follow-up release, Hope. Its version of “Every Stone” is built upon the synth piano playing the main chords with Andy Hull’s heartbreaking vocals atop. While the verses are subdued, the chorus and repetition of “Every stone I’ve thrown has gone away” add a bit more force in their insistence while the song crescendos to its climax. This is a track that levitates with hallowed horn accompaniment and harmonious hope which lends itself to the album’s title.
