Music Monday: “Wash.” by Bon Iver

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Wash.”
Artist: Bon Iver
Album: Bon Iver (2011)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

Climb
Is all we know
When thaw
is not below us
No, can’t grow up
In that iron ground
Claire, all to sore for sound

Bet
Is hardly shown
Scraped
Across the foam
Like they stole it
And oh, how they hold it
Claire, we nearly forfeit

I’m growing like the quickening hues
I’m telling darkness from lines on you
Over havens fora full and swollen morass, young habitat!
All been living alone, where the ice snap and the hold clasts are known

Home
We’re savage high
Come
We finally cry
Oh and we done it
Because it’s right
Claire, I was too sore for sight

We’re sewing up through the latchet greens
Un-peel keenness, honey, bean for bean
Same white pillar tone as with the bone street sand is thrown where she stashed us at
All been living alone, where the cracks at in the low part of the stoning

“Wash.”, by Bon Iver, comes from their self-titled album circa 2011. With resounding piano and a string accompaniment, it conjures scenes of crackling ice and the cold winters of Eau Claire, WI. Singer Justin Vernon makes use of his signature falsetto vocals as his lyrics describe the….well, I’m not entirely sure what they’re describing, but it is a they run together like poetry, which is something often lacking in popular music these days. Its minimalist approach and repetitive nature, combined with small flourishes, mirror the consistency of winter’s cold edge and makes it a fitting song for a chilly day.
