Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “Such Great Heights”
Artist: The Postal Service
Album: Give Up (2003)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
[Verse 1]
I am thinking it’s a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss they’re perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay
And true it may seem like a stretch
But it’s thoughts like this that catch
My troubled head when you’re away
And when I am missing you to death
And when you are out there on the road
For several weeks of shows
And when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home
[Chorus]
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they’ll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now, but we’ll stay
[Verse 2]
I tried my best to leave
This all on your machine
But the persistent beat
It sounded thin upon listening
And that frankly will not fly
You’ll hear the shrillest high
And lowest lows with the windows down
And this is guiding you home
[Chorus]
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they’ll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now, but we’ll stay
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they’ll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now, but we’ll say
[Outro]
(They will see us waving from such great heights)
(Come down now)
They will see us waving from such great heights
(Come down now)
The Postal Service was a side project of Ben Gibbard, from Death Cab For Cutie, that features his vocals and lyrics in addition to production by Jimmy Tamborello, and background vocals by Jenny Lewis. “Such Great Heights” begins with bopping synths and programmed drums to create a bouncing pace as Gibbard sings of the bliss of finding one’s soulmate through the use of poetic imagery. I find this to be an appropriate song for spring in its positivity and upbeat tempo (even if it doesn’t really look like spring outside).

It’s so good! Iron & Wine also did an acoustic cover that is a bit more mellow, but still a great listen.

In the winter of 2003 this album helped me through the beginnings of the slow process of pulling myself out of crack cocaine dependence. This song and “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” helped reawaken the love for music I lost during my “absence.” Nice to see it touched you too.

I’m so glad that you were able to make that transition and that music was able to help. As always, thank you for sharing.

Gotta go with the Iron & Wine cover, personally. This brings back very strong early-aughts memories!

I remember going on a long solo road trip the summer after this came out and basically listening to this album on a continuous loop. The whole thing is quite good.

I couldn’t agree more! Their sound reminds me of books and changing of seasons. I know that doesn’t make sense but that is what it makes me feel.
