Music Monday: “Growing Old is Getting Old” by Silversun Pickups

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Growing Old is Getting Old”
Artist: Silversun Pickups
Album: Swoon (2009)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

So we all are growing old and it’s getting old
Pressure on our hollow bones and the varicose
Suddenly, we decompose, but we’re not alone
So we all are growing old…

Maybe we’re sealed in silence
And maybe we feel a guidance
Maybe your own devices
Will keep you afraid and cold, but I…

Memorized your smile lines when lips divide
Kept alive your childlike reaction time
We’re allowed to expire with ourselves in mind
So we all are growing old…

Put out the feat of silence
and put out the need for guidance
And put out your own devices
And don’t be afraid of the cold, and…

We sing [x3]
We fight [x3]
And then we cry, we cry, we cry
Then we slide, we slide, we slide into the light

[Guitar solo]

Do we sing, we fight, we cry?
We slide, we slide, we slide into the light

Maybe we’re sealed in silence
Maybe we feel a guidance
Maybe your own devices
Will keep you afraid and cold, well

Put out the fear of silence
Put out the need for guidance
Put out your own devices
Don’t be afraid o the cold
Afraid of the cold, afraid over time
You’ve got no where to go but here

“Growing Old is Getting Old”, by indie superstars Silversun Pickups, comes off of their sophomore album, Swoon. Featuring a pulsing bass line and insistent kick drum, electric guitar with delay effects floats in the background as the song builds toward its eventual climax. Singer Brian Aubert’s unique voice croons about growing older as bassist Nikki Monninger provides harmonies in the background. This song showcases the band’s ability to create a soundscape, as well as their more hard rock power at the end of the song when the tension built throughout reaches its release.
