Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “In the Dirt”
Artist: S. Carey
Album: All We Grow (2010)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
Don’t leave ‘cause I believe
We were meant to sleep
In the dirt
If you doubt that I’ll be there
Don’t despair
Don’t you dare
Don’t leave ‘cause I believe
We were meant to sleep
In the dirt
S. Carey got his start playing percussion and providing backup vocals as part of Bon Iver. However, he went on to release his own solo music that showcases his distinct style and songwriting ability. Beginning with a hypnotic piano part in 7/8 time signature, “In the Dirt” pulses with pounding percussion and multi-tracked vocals by Carey, some of which are delayed and this adds a unique quality to the delivery. The percussion drops out and woodwinds take up the chord progressions from the piano before its triumphant return at the end of the song. The lyrics are reassuring someone and, though only a few lines, create more meaning in their simple repetition. “In the Dirt” demonstrates ambiance and the way it can ebb and flow throughout a song which is the true draw to Carey’s work.
