Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “Exo Politics”
Artist: Muse
Album: Black Holes and Revelations (2006)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
[Verse 1]
Open the skies over me
I am waiting patiently
I’ll wait for a sign
As conspiracies unwind
Will you slam shut
Or free your mind
Or stay hypnotized?
[Chorus]
When the Zetas fill the skies
Will our leaders tell us why?
And fully loaded satellites
Will conquer nothing but our mind
[Refrain]
And I’m waiting patiently
And I’ll wait for the sign
[Verse 2]
Carried through the centuries
Secrets locked up and loaded on my back
Well, it weighs me down
[Chorus]
When the Zetas fill the skies
Will our leaders tell us why?
And fully loaded satellites
Will conquer nothing but our mind
[Refrain]
And I’m waiting patiently
And I’ll wait for the sign, yeah
But I’m waiting patiently
And I’ll wait for the sign
Though not a single from the prog-rock masterpiece that is Black Holes and Revelations by Muse, “Exo Politics” is one of the hidden gems in the band’s shining catalog. The track begins with thumping toms before the guitar comes in to mimic the drum pattern. Being a three-piece, the members of Muse put their respective instruments to great effect in order to compliment one another and create a cohesive sound. Bellamy’s ethereal vocals meander atop the sturdy rhythm of the song alongside space-age sirens that create a sort of sci-fi ambiance in the otherwise straightforward song. The lyrics speak to distrust of one’s government and the relationship between a governing body and its people. Never a band to shy away from proclaiming their political sentiments, this is Muse in their element showing what makes them such a unique band.
