Music Monday: “Hang ‘Em High” by My Chemical Romance

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Hang ‘Em High”
Artist: My Chemical Romance
Album: Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

[Verse 1]
Wait until it fades to black
Ride into the sunset
Would I lie to you?
Well, I’ve got something to say
Grab your six-gun from your back
Throttle the ignition, would I die for you?
Well, here’s your answer in spades

[Interlude]
Shotgun sinners, wild-eyed jokers
Got you in my sights
Gun it while I’m holding on

[Verse 2]
After all is said and done
Climb out from the pine box
Well, I’m asking you
‘Cause she’s got nothing to say
The angels just cut out her tongue
Call her Black Maria
Would I lie to you?
That girls not right in the brain

[Interlude]
Mass convulsions strike the choir
By the grace of God
Gun it while I’m holding on

[Chorus]
But don’t stop if I fall
And don’t look back
Oh, baby, don’t stop
Bury me
And fade to black

[Bridge]
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
So get your gun and meet me by the door
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
So get your gun and meet me by the door
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
So get your gun and meet me by the door
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
She won’t stop me, put it down
So get your gun and meet me by the door

[Chorus]
But don’t stop if I fall
And don’t look back
Oh, baby, don’t stop
Bury me
And fade to black
But don’t stop if I fall
And don’t look back
Oh, baby, don’t stop
Bury me
And fade to black

Known for their punk rock sensibilities and macabre lyrics, My Chemical Romance broke into the early 2000’s rock scene with violence and vigor. Their sophomore album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, helped cement their Tim Burton-esque aesthetic and showcased their youth-fueled passion in musical form. Though “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” is the most well known track from this album, I chose to feature “Hang ‘Em High” because it is one of my favorites from the record. The song’s references to cinematic Westerns go further than its title by starting off with a whistle alluding to the famous soundtrack to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. From there on, it is a fast-paced romp of speeding guitars and gasping vocals. Gerard Way paints a picture of the ride-or-die lifestyles of gunslingers that culminates in a catchy chorus and appropriately short run-time. This is a favorite song to cruise to during the June heat.

I absolutely LOVE MCR! Their lyrics are surprisingly clever, but all the scream/singing gives me a headache. Three Cheers is such an under-rated album. Personally, I think it’s their best. It’s as raw and punk as this band ever got. and it tells a fantastic story!
