Music Monday: “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “White Winter Hymnal”
Artist: Fleet Foxes
Album: Fleet Foxes (2008)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

I was following the, I was following the
I was following the, I was following the
I was following the, I was following the
I was following the, I was following the

 I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied ‘round their throats
To keep their little heads
From fallin’ in the snow
And I turned ‘round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow
Red as strawberries in the summertime

I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied ‘round their throats
To keep their little heads
From fallin’ in the snow
And I turned ‘round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow
Red as strawberries in the summertime

I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied ‘round their throats
To keep their little heads
From fallin’ in the snow
And I turned ‘round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow
Red as strawberries in the summertime

An instant indie hit that put Fleet Foxes on the map, “White Winter Hymnal” is a masterclass of harmony and a great reflection of the band’s style. Beginning with a repetition of the first line of the song, the track builds with vocal harmonies and additional instrumentation coming to the fore. The song is beautiful in its simplicity and evocative of the season it describes.
