Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “Mandala”
Artist: The Dear Hunter
Album: The Color Spectrum: Indigo (2011)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
I lost my place in the world
It left me behind
Now my soul is unbound
And my mind is free to roam around and around…
Thoughts drip down to words on a page
Scrawled in a foreign tongue
Circles tending toward the center
Lead you back to none
You can cry, you can beg, you can plead, you can pray…
You may doubt it, apathetic
But you never had control
You saw what you wanted
But the rest was terrible
Pull back the curtain
And reveal the guilty
So the veil can be lifted
And the well will overflow
You’ve been here before
You’ve seen it all
But your conscience won’t recall
And your eyes are barely wide enough
To recognize what your heart keeps giving up
And someday it might win
If your mind’s giving in
Just try to lose yourself
Or do your best till then
Taken from the seventh EP of The Dear Hunter’s The Color Spectrum, “Mandala” features synthesized and digital elements that create the sound of the Indigo EP. Accompanied by strings and a live drum kit, the song’s syncopated beat makes use of piano and synthesizers in addition to layered vocals performed by the band’s creative visionary, Casey Crescenzo. The song takes its title from the Hindu and Buddhist symbol representing the universe; Crescenzo’s lyrics also reference this and bring the symbol to the idea of going through life in a more self-centered manner. “Mandala” is a healthy mix of analog and digital instruments further cementing Crescenzo’s creativity and it is a fitting sound for the color indigo.
