Music Monday: “Genesis” by Devin Townsend

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Genesis”
Artist: Devin Townsend
Album: Empath (2019)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

[Intro]
Surrender it all
Receive this love
Receive this love

[Verse 1]
If you’re saying in your mind, “You’re better off dead”
Well, before the madness comes to claim your name
A million years would go by
(Tell us a story!)
What could I say? What should I say?
It took all of my words and my fantasy worlds
And at the heart of it all, there was nothing!
How they meet their maker is their right while they’re alive
It’s beautiful (It’s beautiful)

[Chorus]
Let there be light
Let there be moon
Let there be stars and let there be you
Let there be monsters, let there be pain
Let us begin to live again
From the top to the bottom
Genesis

[Post-Chorus]
I, beyond the universe
I, beyond the mind

[Verse 2]
All the world is in this together
Feel no fear, we’re fearless forever
So why can’t we just sail away?
Because you’re so in love with this island of the mind
(So in love with this island of the mind)
Know this here island is home
You’ve got to get on your feet again (Genesis)
Get on your feet again
But without your “self”, what’ll become of you?

[Break]
(Take your leave now, shut up, shut up)
You
(Take your leave now, shut up, shut up)
Please don’t take me from my youth
(Take your leave now, shut up, shut up, shut up)

[Bridge]
When we’re apart, we fall
Together, we feed the world

[Chorus]
So let there be light
Let there be moon
Let there be stars, and let there be you
Let there be monsters, let there be pain
Let us begin to feel again
From the top to the bottom
Genesis

If someone were to consolidate all of the things that Devin Townsend does well into a single song, “Genesis”, from 2019’s Empath, would be that song. A reflection of the eclecticism of Townsend’s career, the song serves as a preview for the songs and styles on the album to come. The track begins with a heavenly choir before jolting drum hits and chugging guitars supplement Townsend’s powerful vocals. Running the gambit of electronic music, disco, the mewling of kittens, steel drum island music, and blast beats, the song seamlessly transitions from one genre into the next, showcasing the quirky genius of its creator. Underneath the musical splendor, a positive message is sung through the lyrics with numerous past collaborators, including Ché Aimee Dorval, making appearances. The music video reflects the creative chaos of the song to form a unified expression of Townsend’s vision not only for the song, but the album as a whole.

A note about the music video above: the music video starts with the opening intro track of the album, so the song “Genesis”, as it appears on the album, starts where the lyrics do.
