Music Monday is a meme, created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek, where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.
Song: “Isak”
Artist: Baroness
Album: Red Album (2007)
Lyrics taken from genius.com
Isak
Hands in the ground
Buried
Traces of sound
Scream
Hem in the seed
Water to salt
Salt into rain
Isak
Tender the swine
Carry
The hare and the barrow

“Isak”, from Baroness’ debut album, isn’t verbose in terms of lyrical content, but demonstrates the instrumental abilities of the band. A hard-hitting song, “Isak” begins with ascending and descending guitar harmonics before the introduction of a solid drum pattern leads to a grooving guitar riff. Singer/guitarist John Baizley shouts the lyrics in a primal fury that matches the intense tone of the tune. Baroness is a guitar-centric band, which is evident in the twin guitar leads and various riffs that are strung throughout the song. “Isak” is a favorite of mine and shows the talent of the band that was apparent even in their early years.
